As part of our ongoing campaign to end the tolerance of violence and abuse against support staff in schools, which is a 90% female workforce, GMB London took the message that “Abuse is not part of the job” and projected it onto the Houses of Parliament.
We currently have a survey open for school support staff members and all those who have taken part have contributed to the powerful message GMB London has now shared. You can see the video if you follow us on social media, please share this with your friends and colleagues.

The abuse and violence being experienced in schools would not be tolerated in any other workplace. It is simply not acceptable that over 50% of school-based members say that the school does not take assaults on them seriously and 70% believe they are expected to tolerate abuse as part of the job. This must change.
Ending tolerance of violence and abuse against support staff is not optional. It is a health and safety issue and compliance is a must. Head Teachers cannot keep ignoring their legal duty of care to keep their staff safe from injury and harm and GMB London has sent this message very clearly. GMB London is committed to ensuring support staff are valued and recognised for the highly skilled work they do and will continue to campaign for all members to be treated fairly and with the dignity they deserve. Being part of GMB should give you the confidence to speak up and speak out about any issue in your workplace. By coming together we are stronger. Let’s send a message that the normalising and acceptance of violence and abuse against women has to stop. It is not part of anyone’s job to be assaulted and harmed at work. If you are interested in becoming a workplace Rep or if you would like more information on how to tackle this issue in your school please contact us at schoolsteamlondon@gmb.org.uk. If you have any colleagues who are not in a Union, or if you have friends and family who work in a school, they can join GMB at www.gmb.org.uk/join. Warren Kenny Lisa Bangs
